Being drawn to knives for as long as he can remember, Hylton, as a child, shaped rocks into “caveman knives” and turned building-site offcuts into spears, axes and blades.

THE WAY HYLTON WORKS
Hylton believes in honest work.
No shortcuts. No copying trends. No pretending a knife is something it is not.
His focus is on working knives — pieces made to be used, trusted and kept.
Kitchen knives, hunting knives — camp knives, butcher’s knives and custom pieces built around the person who will use them.
He believes there is a knife for everyone. That belief shapes how he works with clients: listening carefully, guiding the process, and making sure each piece has purpose.

I want a kitchen knife in every home, a hunting knife on every hunter’s belt, and a butcher’s knife in every butcher’s hands.

THE VISION FOR RUTHERFORD FORGE
Hylton’s vision is practical: Rutherford Forge knives in real hands, used by people who value something properly made.

A knife is only as good as the work behind it, and that work is always about the person using it.
”
A LIFE BUILT AROUND STEEL
Hylton did not plan to become a full-time bladesmith.
Marine biology, architecture and vision of being a painter were all part of his dreams. The bladesmith bug bit properly after doing a knife course 20 years ago.
Most of what he knows was learned by doing: reading, watching, experimenting, failing, trying again, and letting the steel teach him.

Everything I do is a new discovery. There’s never an end to this journey.
”
TEACHING THE CRAFT
At Rutherford Forge, Hylton also teaches people to make knives by hand.
Many students arrive unsure whether they can do it.
They leave having taken raw steel through fire, hammer, grinder and finish — and holding something they made themselves.
That moment is part of what keeps the craft alive.

It’s a feeling of wonder and awe I get every time I see someone completing their knife, knowing they managed to see this process through from beginning to end.
”
